Tabletop Exercises for Health Care Facilities

Overview: Participants are the management team for a fictional Nursing Home. Without warning, the internal network slows to a crawl, outgoing email refuses to send, and PCs start to mysteriously reboot. You are under attack... 

This scenario targets how management will deal with a cyber-threat. This is NOT an IT/technology-based exercise, though IT can work in parallel to determine how they would handle such a situation and communicate with the leadership. 

Exercise Focus: Crisis Management / Communications / Business Resumption

Overview: Participants are the management team of a fictional Nursing Home. Suddenly, the facility shakes from a loud explosion! The power is out, staff and residents are injured, the facility needs to be evacuated, people are missing, everyone is upset - how would a team handle such a disaster, especially now that you need to evacuate and relocate residents? See how your management team will respond. 

Exercise Focus: Evacuation / Emergency Response / Crisis Communications 

Overview: Participants are the Hospital Incident Command Structure (HICS) of a fictional hospital. Your team is faced with staff shortages, infrastructure problems, water contamination, a prisoner patient, and protesters - how would a team handle such a disastrous day, especially when a medical helicopter crashes on the hospital's roof. See how your facility engineers will respond. 

Exercise Focus: Emergency Response / Crisis Communications / Public Relations  

Overview: Participants work as the management team for a fictional Nursing Home. Suddenly, you feel a rumble that shakes your facility - a news report blares, “... chemical cloud ... all area buildings must Shelter-in-Place ...”. Now the chaos begins. There are unsettled residents, angry family members, and confused staff members. How will the management team handle the situations that arise when residents and guests are forced to stay inside the designated shelter-in-place areas for a long period of time? How will the staff continue to provide care with limited resources? How will they keep residents, staff, and guests inside and keep throes on the outside from getting in? 

Exercise Focus: Shelter-in-Place / Emergency Response / Crisis Communications

Overview: Participants are the management team of a fictional Nursing Home. Suddenly, everyone jumps as shots are heard. Employees begin screaming and running in every direction. Residents are frightened and upset. The shooter takes hostages as the remaining employees flee the building. While the police talk to the shooter, fear and chaos are prevailing. See how your management team would handle such a disruption, especially now that part of your facility is closed as a crime scene. How will your staff respond?
