Gas Main Explosion for Insurance Companies

Gas Main Explosion Tabletop Exercise for Insurance Companies

This exercise is part of our catalog of tabletop exercises for insurance companies.

Scenario Overview

Participants are the management team for a fictional insurance organization when a loud explosion suddenly shakes the building and disrupts normal operations. Power is lost, employees and guests are injured, and the facility must be evacuated while confusion and concern spread quickly through the site.

As the incident unfolds, the team must account for missing people, respond to injuries, communicate with employees and stakeholders, and determine how to manage the closure of the building. At the same time, deadlines still need to be met, employees are upset, and leadership must begin planning for operational recovery with the facility offline.

This exercise challenges insurance leaders to handle a sudden external explosion that creates life-safety concerns, building closure, accountability issues, and the need for immediate operational recovery planning.

Why This Scenario Matters for Insurance Companies

Insurance companies depend on safe facilities, functioning utilities, employee coordination, and uninterrupted access to claims, legal, and customer service operations. A nearby gas main explosion can create immediate life-safety concerns, disrupt building systems, and force a workplace offline with little warning.

This exercise helps leadership teams evaluate how they would respond when an external infrastructure incident damages the building, requires evacuation, and creates pressure to coordinate emergency response while preparing for closure, recovery, and continuity of operations.

Exercise Objectives

  • Evaluate leadership decision-making following a sudden nearby explosion.
  • Discuss evacuation procedures for employees, guests, and building occupants.
  • Review injury response, accountability, and missing-person procedures.
  • Assess communications with employees, responders, customers, and stakeholders during a fast-moving emergency.
  • Examine operational challenges created by power loss and building closure.
  • Identify priorities for early operational recovery after the facility is no longer usable.

Exercise Format

Conduct-It-Yourself Tabletop Exercises are structured, discussion-based simulations designed to help organizations test their response to disruptive events without the time and cost of a fully facilitated exercise. Participants are placed in the middle of a realistic scenario as it unfolds and must work through decisions, priorities, and consequences as a leadership team.

Each downloadable exercise package includes everything needed to conduct the session internally, including facilitator instructions, exercise overview materials, participant forms, a detailed scenario script, and a ready-to-run PowerPoint presentation that guides the scenario and discussion. The materials are designed so organizations can conduct the exercise as delivered or customize the storyline and supporting materials to reflect their own operations, business lines, and testing objectives.

Most exercises are designed to be conducted in approximately 2 to 4 hours. A typical agenda includes an exercise overview and scenario briefing, the facilitated disaster simulation discussion, group review and preparation for debriefing, and a structured post-exercise discussion to capture lessons learned and improvement opportunities.
