September is National Preparedness Month

August 23, 2017 - September, which is unbelievably just around the corner, is National Preparedness Month, which encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. This year's theme is "Disasters don't plan ahead. You can." In addition to making sure that your business continuity plan is up-to-date, you can and should encourage your family, friends, and employees to educate themselves about preparedness. Some of this issue's articles can help.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Because you never know when the day before... Is the day before. Prepare for tomorrow."
-- Bobby Akart, Author of the Blackout Series --

1. You Have the Power to Prepare

Throughout September, more than 3,000 organizations---national, regional, and local governments, as well as private and public organizations---will support emergency preparedness efforts and encourage Americans to take action. This year, the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response will focus on four important topics -- READY... STEADY... SHOW... GO! Each week, they will publish materials to help.

2. Every Business Needs an Emergency Supply Kit

Business owners everywhere are urged to assemble an emergency supply kit. Emergency preparedness officials with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration have produced a list of items for small and large companies to consider as they plan a survival kit for disaster. Talk to your employees about what your business will be providing in an emergency and what they might want to keep on hand themselves.

3. Ready.gov: Build a Kit

At home, make sure your emergency kit is stocked with the items on the checklist here. Most of the items are inexpensive and easy to find, and any one of them could save your life. Once you take a look at the basic items, consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets, or seniors.

4. You're the Help until the Help Arrives

Life-threatening injuries require immediate action to prevent an injured person from dying. Those nearest to someone with life threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care. This video training could be of great help if you're on the site of an accident situation.

5. How to Prepare for an Active Shooter Incident

Recent national tragedies remind us that the risk is real: an active shooter incident can happen in any place at any time. The best ways to stay safe are to prepare ahead of time and be ready. Taking a few steps now and mentally rehearsing what to do can help you react quickly when every second counts.
