Business Continuity NewsBriefs
June 4, 2008

These NewsBriefs are produced and delivered weekly by Attainium to keep our friends and clients
current on topics relating to Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Crisis Management.

"Make a Difference" is the theme of the National Safety Council's observance of National Safety Month 2008. Throughout June, National Safety Month activities will address the most significant reasons for unintentional injuries and deaths in the American workplace, on the road and in the home and community. According to available data, nearly all of workers' unintentional fatalities, and 70+ percent of disabling injuries, occur while off the clock. It makes sense, therefore, that helping employees stay safe off the job is as important to your operations as safety on the job. The articles below provide helpful tips to keep everyone safe, on and off the job.

Fire is the third leading cause of unintentional injuries and deaths. (Item #1) With summer in reach, sensible practices for avoiding heat stroke are a must. (Item #2) Flooding is a common cause of injuries and death… head for high ground! (Item #3)

Lightning kills; thunderstorms are a huge danger. (Item #4) This Q&A about the use of insect repellent to prevent West Nile Virus is enlightening. (Item #5) Seattle.gov offers these tips for protection and prevention. (Item #6) These safety tips sheets can help educate your employees on critical safety topics. (Item #7)

As always, we look forward to hearing about your concerns with regards to business continuity. If you have a topic you'd like to see covered, please email me at [email protected]

Heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are conditions caused by overexposure to heat. 3. Floods and Flash Floods
Regardless of how a flood occurs, the rule for being safe is simple: head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater. Even a shallow depth of fast-moving floodwater produces more force than most people imagine. It is exceedingly dangerous to try to walk, swim, or drive in floodwater.

4. Thunderstorms
Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes and hurricanes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms. High winds from thunderstorms can cause damage to homes, overturn vehicles, and blow down trees and utility poles, causing widespread power outages.
