"Make a Difference" is the theme of the National Safety Council's observance
of National Safety Month 2008. Throughout June, National Safety Month activities will address
the most significant reasons for unintentional injuries and deaths in the American workplace,
on the road and in the home and community. According to available data, nearly all
of workers' unintentional fatalities, and 70+ percent of disabling injuries,
occur while off the clock. It makes sense, therefore, that helping employees stay safe
off the job is as important to your operations as safety on the job. The articles below provide
helpful tips to keep everyone safe, on and off the job.

2. How to Recognize and Treat Heat Emergencies
Heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are conditions caused by overexposure to heat.
Heat cramps are the least severe but, if not cared for, may be followed by heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are heat-related illnesses. Generally, illnesses caused by overexposure
to extreme temperatures are preventable.

3. Floods and Flash Floods
Regardless of how a flood occurs, the rule for being safe is simple: head for higher ground
and stay away from floodwater. Even a shallow depth of fast-moving floodwater produces more force
than most people imagine. It is exceedingly dangerous to try to walk, swim, or drive in floodwater.

4. Thunderstorms
Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning,
which kills more people each year than tornadoes and hurricanes. Heavy rain from thunderstorms can lead
to flash flooding. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms.
High winds from thunderstorms can cause damage to homes, overturn vehicles, and blow down trees
and utility poles, causing widespread power outages.

5. West Nile Virus: Insect Repellent Use and Safety
Insect repellents can help reduce exposure to mosquito bites that may carry viruses
such as West Nile virus that can cause serious illness and even death. Using insect repellent allows you
to continue to play and work outdoors with a reduced risk of mosquito bites.
