01/14/2009 - Business Continuity in the Current Economic Climate

We are all aware of the importance of business continuity planning, and many companies have BC plans in place. In the current economic climate, however, BC can get pushed to the background as other concerns get attention. Good planning, however, including risk assessment, can help mitigate some risks of the faltering economy and perhaps avoid some disasters. This issue puts business continuity into perspective in the current global economic situation. 01/07/2009 - A Brief Look Back at 2008

As we look back over 2008, we wish to thank you for your continued support of our NewsBriefs, Disaster Experiences, and our mission to streamline the process of Business Continuity. We greatly appreciate your valuable input and participation in all of our endeavors. For this issue only, here is a look at some of what we have done during the past year and what we've got coming up in 2009. Please let me know how we can be of service to you and your organization in the year ahead. 12/17/2008 - Winter Preparedness

Winter is just days away and we’ve already seen deaths and injuries from serious storms as well as power outages caused by ice in the northeast. It’s definitely time to think about some of the potential problems that winter weather can cause – and what we can do about them. Here is helpful information for organizations and individuals on how to prevent and/or deal with some winter-weather related situations. 12/10/2008 - Office Holiday Parties

The holiday season is in full swing and, once again, it’s office party season. Along with the fun, the potential for harassment suits and other liabilities increases at this time of year. There are many things organizations can do to prevent these things from happening, and this issue addresses some common problems. 12/03/2008 - Pandemic

With flu season upon us, we are reminded that the threat of a flu pandemic still exists. While there is no reason to panic at this point, being informed is a good idea that will pay dividends if a pandemic does become a reality. In addition, some of the tips in this week's articles can help you and your organization make seasonal flu outbreaks less troublesome. 11/19/2008 - Testing and Exercising

Once you have a disaster plan in place, does senior management tend to forget about it? Has your plan ever been tested? Are people trained in how to respond and use the plan? Unless you want to be relying on that plan for the first time in a real disaster, you should consider testing it and making sure it works. 11/05/2008 - Identity Theft and Phishing

Identity theft (IDT) is a problem that keeps growing, as thieves figure out new ways to steal personal information from individuals and businesses. It can ruin people and businesses financially and, at the least, can cause serious problems from it which it will take years to recover. The best thing you can do about IDT is to prevent it. This issue provides some helpful information about what to do and what not to do to protect the information you hold. 10/29/2008 - Reputation Management

The reputation of your organization, although it is an intangible asset, is likely the most valuable asset to manage and maximize. Your good reputation can attract and keep customers, members, investors, employees, subscribers, and whoever else is important to your success. The better your reputation the easier you can weather crises, scandals, errors, or other events. A bad reputation may cause your demise. 10/22/2008 - Crisis Communications

As we figure out how to deal with the current financial crisis, communication may be the best tool we have to keep our organizations on an even keel and our employees, customers, members and other publics from a state of panic. If you fail to let folks know what your risk is and what you are doing to survive this situation, they will have to fill in the blanks themselves – and the results won’t be pretty. While communication is critical at all times, the tough times make it more important than ever. 10/15/2008 - Terrorism

Many of us fear the possibility of a terrorist attack… and assume that such an event will occur. And we have to prepare for such an attack, even though we have no idea what form it might take, or where or when it would happen. Learn more as you assess your risk and develop your plans.
