10/10/2007 - Risk Management
Risk – of all kinds – is in areas where we’d expect to find it and even in situations we never thought of. The process of risk management is a way to protect an organization from financial or other harm by identifying, analyzing, financing, and controlling risk.
10/03/2007 - Your Employees
Companies always talk about the fact that their most valuable resource is their employees. What they don’t talk about much, however, is that employees also can be the source of business losses and disruptions. Disgruntled employees or ineffective employee policies represent potential dangers to every business.
09/26/2007 - Cyber Threats
When you think of business continuity today, it’s not just natural or man-made disasters that come to mind… it’s also cyber disasters that can damage your systems, networks and you’re your reputation. When you’re creating your business continuity plan, therefore, you have to give cyber threats the same priority as any other potential disasters. And don’t think you’re too small to worry about it; cyber threats are a danger to organizations of all sizes.
09/19/2007 - Shelter in Place
September is National Preparedness Month; the goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action. This week’s topic, Shelter in Place, is an area that often is ignored in business continuity and disaster recovery plans, but it’s something too important to ignore.
09/12/2007 - Pandemic
It seems that interest in and concern about pandemic planning has recently been waning, in spite of the fact that most experts consider a pandemic not an “if” but a “when” scenario. With everything else on our plates, it’s easy to understand how pandemic planning can get left behind. Perhaps we can re-invigorate our planning by remembering that the usual flu season is coming up and that many of the plans for pandemics can be useful in keeping things running in a plain old flu epidemic as well.
09/05/2007 - Crisis Communications
Communicating in a crisis has many dimensions, including both reliable communication systems and communicating effectively to members, employees, customers and other publics. Brands and reputations can be destroyed in a matter of hours if communication is disrupted or the right information isn’t provided to the right people at the right time.
08/29/2007 - Facility Management
Facilities have unique continuity issues, whether you own your property or lease it. In addition, as the person or organization managing the building, you are responsible for the health and safety of large numbers of workers and building visitors. This issue targets business continuity for your facility or facilities.
08/22/2007 - Compliance
The result of non-compliance or inadvertently mishandling a personnel matter is that an increasing number of employers are finding themselves in labor board hearings or on the receiving end of an employee lawsuit. Non-compliance with the myriad of other laws requiring your compliance can result in more trouble. This issue will help familiarize you with compliance in these areas and help you prevent non-compliance problems.
08/15/2007 - Terrorism
One definition of terrorism says that it is the difference between being prepared and being panicked. If so, then it’s important to make sure that preparations are in place or underway to ensure that your organization and its employees make it through any terrorist action. Are you prepared?
08/08/2007 - Identity Theft and Phishing
It is said that security is a process, not a product. Even if you have many “tools” to prevent phishing and identity theft, perhaps your best defense is knowledge about how these could happen to you, your employees, and/or your organization. As long as valuable customer or individually identifying information is available, your association or company could be next.
