01/09/2008 - Employee Issues
Employees are your most important asset, but they also are a potential source of business disruption. This week’s articles have been selected to provide information on some of the possible problems – discrimination, wrongful hiring, workplace stress, and other costly situations. The more you know, the less likely you’ll be taken to court by an employee.
01/02/2008 - A Brief Look Back at 2007
As we look back over 2007, we wish to thank you for your continued support of our NewsBriefs, Disaster Experiences, and business continuity consulting services, and for your valuable input and participation in all of our various activities. For this issue only, we are going to change our format so we can tell you about what we have done during the past year and fill you in on some upcoming activities. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our programs and how they might be of help to your organization.
12/19/2007 - Crisis Communications
It used to be said that a company’s reputation could be ruined in a day. Since the advent of the Internet, email, and blogs, reputations can be damaged in only minutes. It used to be that a company’s crises could be handled almost before they were discovered; not so today. It makes great good sense, therefore, to have in place a crisis communication plan that you can implement as soon as something happens, because managing the crisis could be the only way to avoid disaster.
12/12/2007 - Pandemic
Between 10 and 20 percent of the U.S. population is estimated to contract influenza annually, and approximately 36,000 people die every year from flu in this country. A pandemic flu would result in many times that number of deaths and have an unimaginable impact on business. Many organizations are unwilling to prepare now for the possibility of a pandemic, but those who do plan are able to mitigate the impact of annual influenza as well.
12/05/2007 - Winter Preparedness
Over the weekend, winter storms were responsible for a number of deaths, and the weather forecast predicts more of the same storm conditions for the near future in various parts of the country. Accidents, sickness, and power outages are only some of the issues for which you have to be prepared when the weather turns wintry. Yhis issue will help you make preparations to keep your organization and your employees safe through the next several months.
11/28/2007 - Office Holiday Parties
If you’ve noticed that the character of office holiday parties has changed in recent years, you’d be right. Unfortunately, office parties today mean legal liability for employers, and many of them have backed off on offering the kind of bashes of the past. But you don’t have to be a scrooge; you can take the advice offered in this issue to help you avoid the costs and impacts “party litigation.”
11/14/2007 - Reputation Management
You’re in the office early, trying to get a start on email… and you have a bunch of messages from board members and others about a blog entry besmirching your organization. Now what? Do you have a reputation management plan in place? In this age of “Internet time,” a reputation can be seriously damaged or even destroyed before the week – or the day -- is over.
11/07/2007 - Identity Theft
How prepared are you to deal with a Man-in-the-Middle Attack? Also known as web spoofing, this is a method of identity theft that makes victims of both a business and individuals. The thief is in the middle of a transaction between an individual and a organization’s web site… and that organization could be yours if you’re not up on how to protect yourself from web spoofing and other ID theft activities.
10/31/2007 - Testing and Exercising
Not only is exercising or testing your business continuity or disaster recovery plan a good idea, it’s also a legal requirement for some industries. And some insurance companies now are requiring that you not only have a plan but that you test it. If all of that isn’t enough to convince you, this issue has many reasons to support the need to exercise your plan.
10/24/2007 - Business Continuity Planning
It’s hard to believe that there are still organizations that have no business continuity plan, but there are a lot of them out there. Whether you’re just starting to work on your plan or you need to do some updating, this issue will be of help.
